For your Will, you will need to name an executor. After you die, your executor is the person who has the duty to carry out the wishes that you’ve stated in your Will, and he or she is the person whom the funeral home should consult on all decisions. The executor will distribute your assets to the people you designate in your Will. You should choose a person who is both familiar and comfortable with financial matters and can perform duties such as going to a notary and getting signatures. The individual you name needs to be trustworthy, fair, and good at dealing with emotions. If you are married, we recommend that you name your spouse as your executor. However, depending on your situation, your spouse may not be your choice to serve as your executor. If you have a child, you may choose to have him or her serve as the executor of your Will. In most states, your executor must be 18 years of age.
